MLK Day Parade
The threat of rain, a family reunion, and a noon wedding at First Baptist
cut into the size of our group, but we were well-represented on January 16
at the 2010 MLK, Jr. Parade. This is a list of the people who marched with
the Hinds County Bar Association (including Steve Ray who was out of town
but supported us by letting us use his truck).

Watkins Elementary School playground dedication
HCBA attended the Watkins Elementary school playground dedication and ribbon cutting held Sept. 24. HCBA was recognized as one of the top sponsors. The children made a huge thank you card for each of the donors. The HCBA should be very proud of this important contribution to the local community.



2009 Golf Tournament
For the first time in several years, the Hinds County Bar and the
Jackson Young Lawyers combined their respective golf tournaments. The event was held June 11 at Annandale Golf
Club. Chairing the tournament for the HCBA was Jay Kilpatrick,
and Clarence Webster served as the JYL Chairman. The HCBA
proceeds will be given to the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, and the JYL proceeds will go to Mississippi Boys and Girls Clubs. Both organizations, HCBA and JYL, are very appreciative of all the sponsors.

June Membership Meeting

HCBA Essay Contest
The Hinds County Bar this spring held its annual Essay Contest
chaired by Lindsay Watts. The contest was open to eighth graders in the Jackson-Metro area.
First place winner was Mary Tabor Barron (Madison Middle School) and her essay is printed below. Second place winner was Miranda Barrett (St. Joseph's Catholic School) and third place was Teryn Yazdani (St. Joseph's Catholic School). The winners were recognized at the June Membership Meeting and received a cash prize as well as a trophy.

Hinds County Bar Association Awards $3,000 Grant to MS Humanities Council to purchase Children’s Books for Family Literacy Program
The HBCA recently awarded a grant to the Mississippi Humanities Council to purchase new children’s books for its family literacy program that teaches young children and their families of love of reading. David Morgan accepted the award for the Council, which was presented by the Grant Committee. Hinds County Bar Association Awards Grant to P.A.L.S. to purchase washer dryer
The HBCA recently awarded a grant to purchase a new washer dryer for P.A.L.S., a transitional group home for adolescents operated by Southern Christian Services. Hinds County Bar Association Awards $4,100 Grant to Watkins Elementary for New Playground
The HBCA presented a check for $4,100 to Watkins Elementary School for a new playground to be constructed.
